EcoTravel Cottages

For years we have been dreaming up our own little paradise – and since June 2014 we are pleased to share our dream with you, our EcoTravel guests! Inspired by the love of creative design we have combined western comfort and traditional jungle style with a dream location. Five spacious rooms with big chill out balconies offer panoramic views over Bohorok River and the Sumatran jungle. This definitely makes our EcoTravel Cottages the most atmospheric of all hotels in Bukit Lawing.

Made mostly from natural stone and local wood the design draws strongly on traditional Batak Karo architecture combined with Alpine elements. It is the result of an inspiring creative process running between Kembar and Christina for more than two years. And the result is very well worth the effort. The Indonesians would say: „Luxury made by an architect“. The Germans would say: „Made by creative enthusiasts”. As our hotel was built completely by local craftsmen please don’t expect a western technical standard. The choice of building material had to be limited to the supply offered by the jungle.

We gave our best and now our EcoTravel team offers the highest standard of rooms and service in Bukit Lawang with daily cleaning and modern private bathrooms with hot showers. Designed to capture the wind, our roof vents funnel a cooling breeze into your room with mosquito nets keeping the midges out and a comfortable temperature in all year long. Our maisonette-style Jungle View Suites as well as our Jungle View Rooms offer a fridge, roof and/or standing fans, a lock-up safety box, mosquito nets, tea and coffee making facilities, hair-dryer and electricity boxes inside and outside.

Stay in one of our rooms or double floor suites and re-connect with nature – with the help of fresh air circulation, panoramic jungle views and the sounds of Bohorok River. Enjoy a hot shower and fresh towels after a strenuous jungle trek. Our EcoTravel team will pamper you with individual service to make your stay most memorable – 24 hours a day. To boost your energy for any outdoor activities our guests can choose between five delicious breakfast sets every day. For lunch or dinner there is no restaurant at EcoTravel Cottages as we specialize in decent accommodation and our highly popular tours.

Nevertheless, there’s no need to stay hungry: there is a dozen of good restaurants around with our cottages being just a few minutes from the old orang-utan feeding platform and right on the Bohorok riverside of the Bukit Lawang walking way.

Most of the food we offer is sourced locally. We follow ecological guidelines by managing different types of waste and avoiding plastic. Drinking water is available for free to all our guests during their stay.

Apart from that our employees work on a steady basis with reliable working times and regular days off – a social concept which is not yet very common in this area. All our staff are from nearby villages, even if that means their English is not very good.

We have introduced a rotating system of guiding and supervising, with guides switching posts with our cottage managers on a weekly basis. The result is a kind of pension scheme giving our guides a regular job even if they get older and lack the fitness for regular guiding.

And what is the most important effect of all these efforts? Our 10-strong team is able to pamper a maximum of 14 guests in 5 rooms – you shouldn’t ask for less!
