Sumatra Homestay Experience (3-day tour)

This adventure takes you to an amazing place in the area surrounding Bukit Lawang. Sumatra EcoTravel has created an innovative tour, that gives travelers a rare opportunity to experience traditional life in the village of Simpang Mursal Timbangjaya. Guests can take part in daily activities of the villagers in a non-intrusive way. Our local experienced guide will be with you throughout your stay, to facilitate communication and interaction and to provide support at all times. On top of benefiting the host people directly by allowing them to provide their own food and accommodation to guests, the whole community gets supported as well, because 5% of the price goes into a village fund!

Day 1: On the first day you will start at 9 o’clock in the morning from Bukit Lawang and follow the irrigation stream to the rice fields, were you will be observing the villagers’ day-to-day work, their time less routine of planting and harvesting rice. This trek will lead you through reproduction forest, rice paddy panoramas, green valleys and agricultural village lands. Accompanied by the sound of birds, beautiful butterflies and buffaloes. Along the way, you will spend some time visiting locals in the fields or in the peaceful villages. You will be able to experience this wonderful countryside and various wild animals, especially many beautiful birds will cross your way. At lunch time you will take a break, then you will walk to Simpang Mursal Timbangjaya and meet the family, you will be staying with. The day ends with cooking and having a typical local dinner together.

Day 2: The following day you will walk around a public forest production land. There you will be able to observe the process of how local people make brown sugar. After lunch you will continue to places, where you can see locals making mattresses, doing bamboo weaving and weaving roof from palm leaf. After a 5 hours walk you will arrive back at your home stay. We like to describe this tour as not just an adventure but an educational, ecological and cultural experience! After dinner with your family you will then have the choice of either doing a local handcraft course or taking a walk to observe nocturnal animals.

Day 3: The next morning you will walk back to Bukit Lawang with fantastic impressions to take home.

Note: During this three-day adventure you will have enough time to explore the villagers’ life, but it all depends on the specific needs and circumstances!
