Landak River: Bufferzone Trail (3-day tour)

This Sumatra EcoTravel tour starts on the west side of Bukit Lawang, along the border of the Gunung Leuser National Park and takes you away from the "tourist area" to the peaceful Landak River. By trekking on secret back trails you will also learn about forest reproduction and experience how rubber is harvested. We like to describe this tour as not just an outdoor adventure but an educational and ecological experience.

Day 1: By the sounds of birds, insects and the flowing river you will arrive after a 3-hours walk through rubber plantations and secondary forest to the charming and isolated Landak River. On the way you will join villagers while taping their rubber plantations by using special knives. Our experienced guides will explain the traditional kind of work to you. At the Landak River you will take a break for a swim and have a delicious local lunch.  After relaxing and enjoying the grandiose landscape of this area you will go further to the other side of the Landak River and trek through rubber plantations to the basic camp of the villagers at the border of the national park. At this amazing hidden place you can observe many kinds of monkeys like Thomas leaf monkey, longtail macaque, silver tail macaque, gibbons and wild orangutans, because they like  the young fruits and shots from the leaves. Also many birds will join you there again. At night you will stay in one of the local basic lodges from the villagers. Your evening meal and your breakfast will be cooked over an open campfire.

Day 2: The next morning you will trek through the magnificent rainforest in this secret area. The trail follows around 5 hours up and down the hill of the border of the Gunung Leuser National Park. So along the way you will see again some of the great wildlife like orangutan, wild pig, deer, wild goat, Thomas leaf monkey or short tail macaque. Our guide will inform you about the biodiversity of this national park. Around 3 o'clock in the afternoon you will be back  at your basic campsite and also stay there the second night accompanied by the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 3: After breakfast then you will walk back to Bukit Lawang through rice fields and stop along the way for a light lunch and to cool off in the river.
